Fingals Frosty Feet.

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Hi Amanda & Phillip,

Just to let you know that Fingal is still doing really well and loving the ton of snow that we’ve had. He’s getting lots of attention because the schools have been closed and the boys and their friends have been playing with him outside. He looks a little bit sad in the second photo there, but he really isn’t!

He’s been doing well at puppy classes, apart from weeing on the floor one week ( the only person who was phased by that was me!) and can do sit and down pretty reliably and is learning heel. He likes to play fetch although only a few times and can dribble with a football too. He’s a bundle of fun and so sociable everyone takes to him, although he nearly went off with the postman yesterday so we have to keep an eye on him. He has the occasional accident in the house, usually later in the evening when he’s tired and is good about asking out for a poo. We’ve kept him on the same food, up to 320g a day and this seems to be suiting him well.

He’s going to be very like bomber and has a lovely nature, full of mischief but does take a telling. We’re all really enjoying having him and he seems to be having a whale of a time too. He’s made such a difference to our lives I would not have believed it!

We’ll keep you posted with his expoits.

Kind regards,

Anne

Gundog training: One to one lessons.

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

One-to-one training is ideal for young dogs. Usually from about 13 weeks of age and suitable for puppies up to 12 months. Starting with a young puppy enables you to get into good habits from the very beginning but it essential that you keep it up. This is also a good option for those of you that need session times to fit in around your schedule, or that prefer individual attention. We also give you homework and the opportunity to work on a particular skill or objective. Need some advice on getting started with your puppy give us a call on 01636 821600.

Black Labrador Retriever Mr Woods aka Woody.

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Dear Amanda & Philip

As promised an update on Mr.  Woods.

As you can see from the above photos he has become a real “Wild Fowler” he finds water wherever we are. Not always the cleanest I might add! He loves coming down to our little summerhaus near the beach in Suffolk and has taken it all in his stride.

He has really settled now and has his favorite advantage points in the house, in case he should miss something.

He is a joy to take on walks. He returns to us when called, whistled or signaled to and walks to heel when asked. Should we be curtailing the length of walks as he is still relatively young? He thoroughly enjoyed a 7 miler last weekend when he had a Golden Retriever to play with but we wonder if we should not have gone so far.

He is a lovely dog, more confident with us now, a joy to have as part of the family. He is great with other dogs and is smart enough to give the little snappy ones a wide birth. Nelson and he are great friends. He loves going to pubs and sits quietly under the table. We have started to leave him for longer periods now during the day. He goes through the night without chewing and we have left him a couple of times  for 4 hours without disaster. We don’t use the cage at all now so will plan to return it to you ASAP. The only things he ate was our TV remote control and he pinched a ham hock from the side in the kitchen when I wasn’t paying attention!  But it reminds us that he is after all still young.

He is about to have another adventure this weekend when he comes away with us in our caravan. Watch this space……

Thank you both once again for teaching him all he knows.

Regards
David,Sue & Woody Seaton

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever updates from the summer of 2010.

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

We would like to say a big thank you for everyone that keeps in touch and sends us updates on the progress of puppies past and present.

We feel this is so important so we as responsible breeders can monitor progress on certain matings and whether or not we have produced a well balanced puppy.

We have added some of the  photos for you all to enjoy!

Thank you the boys are doing great.

We thought this would be a nice email to share with you all.

Good afternoon Philip
I thought I would leave it a few weeks before I gave you an update on Ross so that I would have lots to tell you.
You’ll be pleased to know that he settled in quickly and Basil and he get on very well – lots of play fighting followed by them snuggling up together in their outside area.Basil has only had to really assert himself once and that was when Ross decided to try and take Basil’s chew bone away from him and boy did Basil tear into him – Ross has not tried since !!
The boys sleep together downstairs (Ross in a large Lintran crate which I open when I come downstairs in the morning) and neither moves until I’m all kitted out for our 6.30 am walk – I then call them each by name with a good gap between names (Basil first) – Ross understands this and is very steady – at all our garden gates, field gates, the car crate and at feeding time I continue this practice and again Ross is very steady. He was a little sick when we left you but he’s been in the car every day since and is now fine.
During the first week I did very little retrieving work with Ross concerntrating more on sit / stay / heel / come. Sit, stay and heel were as expected good and have got even better (as Ross has bonded with me) – coming to name was a problem at first again because Ross did not know me, HOWEVER, I have spent alot of time on this and he now comes to me both by name and on the whistle even if he appears interested in something else !!
This week I started on hand signals and he is getting the hang of this – yesterday I buried a couple of tennis balls in long grass and with hand movements near the tennis balls and verbal commands “THERE” and “FIND IT” in an excited voice he watched Basil find the balls – so I tried it with him and he soon started to pick it up.
Today (with Basil) he achieved his first “BACK” commands having watched Basil – this was very rewarding and he really cottoned on quickly. I am currently doing all retrieving training with the dogs side by side and Ross is very steady – I’m mixing it up so that neither knows whos retrieve it will be. As a final retrieve today I launched two large dummies a long way into some really rough grass  – Ross did a great job of finding his dummy as I thought he hadn’t marked it
I can also report that having delivered a retrieve back to me Ross now walks (with some encouragement) behind me and sits on my left hand side AND when walking both dogs on the lead Basil knows his place and that’s on the outside of Ross !!!
Ross and I have also been out on two occasions with other dogs – once with my friend Mark and his 1 year old Black lab dog where we used starting pistols with retrieves well away from our dogs and Ross did very well ; and secondly we attended a puppy training class with my trainer Dave Probert – this was all about steadiness and Dave actually used Ross for part of the demo on lead work and how a dog reacts to lead tension.Ross also came back to the recall whistle along a line of 8 other dogs without taking his eyes off me !!
Believe it or not, Basil has sharpened up his retrieving because there’s another dog in close proximity – result !!
All in all we are delighted with him ( puppy wappiness and all !!) – he comes into my TV room every night with Basil and usually falls asleep at or on my feet – Mandy just can’t believe how we have bonded.
Much of what I have written here is down to you and the time you spent with Ross and for this I am very grateful – be assured he is already much loved and will have a full and happy life with us here in Leicestershire – I have taken some photographs and will send them to you shortly.
I hope that you and your family are all well and that you continue to be busy. Keep in touch.
Best regards
Simon
